The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is a light-duty, mid-sized four-wheel drive cars that come in the toyota land cruiser line produced by the Toyota Motor Corporation. It is a very popular Sport Utility Vehicle(SUV) from Toyota.
In the Europe the car comes in the name Toyota Land Cruiser Lexus GX 470 and Toyota 4Runner Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), with nearly identical body panels and a V8 engine. All models named Prado has the following features:-
- front independent suspension
- ladder frame
- two-speed transfer case
Land Cruiser 70-Light series / Bundera model: 1984 to 1990
The Land Cruiser was first developed in November as the light duty of the 70 series. The vehicle was available only with a short body. The top could be selected to be either soft or hard with metal. This light weight Land cruiser came with the names Land Cruiser, Land Cruiser II, and Bundera. There were three engines available:-
- 2.4 L (2366 cc) 22R gasoline engines
- 2.4 L (2446 cc) 2L diesel engines
- 2.4 L (2446 cc) 2L -T diesel engines
Land Cruiser 70-series Prado model: 1990 to 1996
A new type of the Toyota Land Cruiser was developedin April 1990. The designs of front fender, front grill and the engine hood were changed. There were changes in the headlamp design also. This time the sub name "Prodo" was attatched to the name. Prado means a Plain or field in Portuguese. Even though it is more suitable for on-road purposes, it is also highly capable for off-road purposes. It is created as a Super Hybrid 4WD. It has electronic fuel injection system and 4 speed automatic transmission. It had a 2.4L diesel engine which has a 97 metric horsepower (=71 kW) and 24.5 kg·m (240 N·m/177 ft·lbf) high torque unit was also installed into the vehicle. It came in two versions, LX5 which is the two door version and SX5 which is the four door version and also the four door with the highest class was the EX5.
Land Cruiser 90-series Prado model: 1996 to 2002
It was in 1996 that the 70-series Prado got modified and this gave for the new 90-series Prado. This was an entirely new and independent series. The new series was larger than the 70-series. But it was also a heavy duty one. It had a smaller and lighter engine compared to the 70-series. The series with 3-door, starts with an R in the series - RZ, RX, RS to RJ while the 5-door line-up starts with a T in the series with TZ, TX, TS, to TJ. All the models have got a front double wishbone and a 4 linked suspension with a full time 4WD. It also had the following features:-
- ABS
- Field Monitor showing altimeter
- Thermometer and pressure
- Television display and audio set (optional)
Land Cruiser 120-series Prado model: from 2003
The all new Land Cruiser Prado came in 2003. It was not a light weight Land Cruiser like its predecessors. But also a mid-sized SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle). In the Europe first a new 4.0 L (3955 cc) V6 1GR-FE gasoline engine was released first. The engines available are:-
- 2.7 L (2693 cc) straight-4 3RZ-FE
- 3.4 L (3378 cc) V-6 5VZ-FE
- 3.0 L (2982 cc) straight-4 Turbo diesel 1KD-FTV
Diesel models of the 120-series had the 1KZ-TE turbo diesel engine which had a maximum output rating of 131 PS (96 kW) and also the 5L-E natural aspirated diesel engine rating 95 PS (=70 kW) . Toyota introduced the new 1KD-FTV Turbo Diesel (D-4D] engine to meet EuroIV emission standards in November 2006. This engine delivers a power of 173 PS (127 kW) and a torque of 410 Nm. The upgrade to the D-4D engine gave the 120-series Prado a transmission upgrades to the diesel range. The addition of 5-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmissions added in line with the petrol powered range. The Prado received several equipment and safety upgrades from August 2007.
